LONELY WOMAN NEEDS ADVICE

Hello! Everyone, ever since I have been embarked on this weight loss journey at Buddy Slim I have been losing my family and friends at a steady clip. I have not visited or called them for a long time now so many of them have given up on me.

I did not mean to end all of the relationships I just felt that it was healthier for me to do so, that’s all! Some of them were just dragging me down anyway and others were actually making me sick.

They wanted too much from the relationship. Frequent visits for instance, some were even across town or out of town and at the price of gas, forget it! Then there was often the question of how much do I eat? and overeating once I got there.

They didn’t care how many calories, grams of fat or grams of sugar that they were serving me they just wanted me to visit them and often. There were times when I didn’t really want to go but I went anyway because I was bored or sad or I wanted to celebrate something with them.

They often made me feel so guilty when it was time to go that I actually had a stomach ache and I even felt like barfing sometimes.

So I thought to myself if Burger King and Dairy Queen along with Papa Gino, Mrs Fields, Colonel Sanders, Papa John and Ronald McDonald would have really cared about me they would not have made me feel guilty all the time when I went to visit them.

I still have other old friends I see in the grocery store from time to time like Mrs. Butterworth, Ben & Jerry, Skippy, Aunt Jamima and Little Debbie just to name a few but they just stare at me in discontent because they know now that I will not take them home with me. They are no longer welcome here.

I am lonely however boy! how I miss that Little Debbie and Ben & Jerry but I need to meet new friends to replace the old ones who have let me down.

Can you help me out? I really enjoy visiting but I need to go to healthy places to visit. I need healthier friends at the grocery store too! Won’t you introduce me to some of your friends and relatives? I would be so grateful! Luv Ya! sistas! and mistas!

What healthy restaurants have replaced the fast food joints for you?

What source of sugar/salt has replaced your potato chips and cakes, ice cream at the grocery store?

Hey! One thing that I’ve really enjoyed is Low Fat or Fat Reff yogurts, or sugar free pudding snacks. I’m a big ice cream girl, and sometime these help give me the fix I need. Another good idea is… if you miss the food at your poopy old friend’s houses, you can try and make healthier versions of their meals. Cooking your own meats, using whole wheat buns, and adding more vegetables, or fruits or whatever can really help, and maybe it will help with those urges to visit your old friends. :) You don’t need ‘em!

Fiber One bars are the best! Choc full of chocolate chips they are sure to ease the chocolate craving. They have only 140 cal, 4g of fat, a whopping 9g of fiber, 10g of sugar, and 2g of protien(oh my I knew that info by heart). They are delicious and I eat one once a day. As far as fast food goes I try not to do it at all cause there really isn’t a healthy place(I have often thought of starting my own chain but have no money or any idea how to go about it)The best would have to be subway if you can make the right choices. Also weight watchers smartones desserts are very good. That is about all I have.

Yeah! thank you so much girls you have given me so many helpful suggests for food substitutions. I will be looking for them next I grocery shop. Luv Ya! sista!

For ice cream, I like Skinny Cow stuff.

I try to eat out in Italian restaurants as much as possible, instead of fast food chains and chinese etc. It’s much easier to get healthy, grilled dishes there, and their salads are uper healthy and gorgeous!

I’ve started eating sweet potato now instead of regular potatos and I love them. Introduced my family to them last year (didnt tell them what it was!) and they loved them.

I’m still trying to find heathier options to icecream. If I’m in town and fancy ice cream, I’ll sometimes ask for sorbet instead. More refreshing and just a fraction of the calories.

Oh…. frozen fruit, like raspberries and strawberries! I put 2 packets into the freezer to keep them for as I wanted them. Took out some raspberries last night and they were gorgeous frozen… bitter but with a bit of natural yougurt on top…. yummy and crunchy and gorgeous!

i’m not too sure its totally low fat, (ok, i know its not) but in the morning (and i always likes sweets in the morning- LOVED leftover pumpkin pie after thanksgiving) sometimes i’ll have a soy milk/frozen banana/peanut butter smoothie. as for salty stuff- try some edamame (soy beans in the pod) boiled (you can also steam them in the microwave) with a little salt. lol- and don’t eat the outside. just the beans. hope it helps!
and fruit. fresh fruit is fabulous.

Go to hungrygirl@hungry-girl.com This site is awsome, sign up for their daily newsletter-recipes, guilt-free groceries. They keep you posted on all the new healthy choices out there and re-invent fast food recipes and old favorites, too. They give all the nutrit. values and points. It’s free and I can’t tell you how helpful it is. Dryer’s or Edys Yogurt Blends are my ice cream replacement. 100 to 120 cals per 1/2 cup, low fat (3 points) and so far my favs are choc brownie, pecan praline swirl and berry granola crunch, and choc, van. swirl, and…… ha ha. I could go on and on. If they make it, I will eat it. I am lactose intolerant, so this is a lifesaver for me. ps, if you like guacamole this morning’s hungry girl is something you’ll flip over and is 78 cals (1 point) for 1/3 cup vs 150 (4 points) for the ‘real version’.

ummmmm my new favorite is almonds — salty, raw, flavored, whatever…. takes care of my salt fix AND gets in a little (ahem) roughage….
my other new fav for fast food is Schlotsky’s and Quizno’s — BUT, i don’t actually order anything off their menu — i make up my own sandwhich… usally having something to do with wheat bread, swiss cheese (or provolone) lots of vegies, maybe some turkey but sometimes no meat, then i ask them to sprinkle some oil and vinegar instead of using dressings — my fav vegie is advocado, yes, it is high in fat, BUT the good fat and it comes with so many other hard-to-get vitamins and omega-3!!!

We have ice cream made by blue bunny..their choc covered vanilla icecream ..ones on a stick…is 90 calories…small…but, really good. Weight watchers even has ice cream in the little cups…those are good too. We just have like 2 “real” restraunts here and the rest fast food…so if I end up eating at the fast food place…I like the kids meals or just cutting the adult portions in half. Hope these tips help ya. I just love the way you write! So smart and talented!

if you have the time to really look around at the grocery store, you will really find some new friends. there are so many substitions to what you are wanting. Even little debbie has come up with 100 calories treats. Lot of resturants even have healthy choices menus and give you the calories and fat etc…. Regroup and you will be just fine.

You are sooo AWSOME! I love your blog and the way you put things. I really don’t go out o eat alot but if I do it is usaully subway…. I don’t like the fast food cuz we don’t eat beef we eat venison so the fast foo meat makes me ill. but ice cream?Well…. I buy the no sugar added and I put it in a coffee cup to control the amount. Have a great day …luv ya sis!

Bunless Boca Burger (vegie patty - about 230 caleries less than a hamburger patty). That’s my favorite these day. It may sound weird but I’ve discovered it is delicious and only 115 caleries if you don’t put cheese on it (185 w/1.5 ounce of cheese). I fry up a Boca Burger (use non-stick spray in the pan or it will stick). While it’s cooking I stack lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle on a plate, squirt on some mustard and a tbsp of sweet pickle relish and then when it’s done I put the boca burger on top. And Vala - a bunless burger that I think is much tastier than with the bun.

Also Aunt Jamima makes a great tasting sugar free syrup and those 10 calerie packs of just about anything you might want are out now - chips, crackers, sweets - they are a good way to satisfy your need for something salty or sweet without blowing your program to heck and back. I plan one a day and I find they are very satisfying.

For Icecream I like the Skinny Cow products. They make a great icecream sandwhich (YUM).

Have fun and let us know who your new friends are. We might like to meet them too!

  14. shrinkingfaster @ July 8th, 2008

Ooopppsss. Update. Went back checked my caleries and 225 caleries (with 1 slice of cheese) for the bunless boca burger - but is still 230 caleries less than a regular hamburger with the same stuff on it. Subtract 1113 caleries if you won’t be putting cheese on it.

Thanks for asking Greta my new friends are Mr. Quaker with his weight control oatmeal, Ms. Barilla with her whole grain spaghetti, Uncle Ben with his whole grain brown rice, Mr. Classico with his 4 cheese spaghetti sauce, the Campbell’s kids with their Select soups, Mr.Bush with his vegetarian beans, Ms Lipton with her ice tea and Elsie with her fat free milk. I had others too numerous to mention and now thanks to all of you and all of your additions I have no excuses to go hungry any more while on this new nutritional life changing regimen. Thank so much! to all that have contributed thus far. Luv Ya! sistas! and mistas! I guess the only healthy restaurants are those that are flexible and offer healthy food. If you one besides Subway let me know being retired hubby and I tend to eat out a lot while in NH (daughter’s house) a lot more faithful to home cooking on our turf in Florida.

  16. poet @ July 8th, 2008

Thanks not Thank. If anyone Knows one. Oh! My dang!OCD

  17. JustJane47 @ July 8th, 2008

My suggestion was going to be Subway…YUMMY!!!

I love the “healthy bunch” popsicles/fudgesicles/creamsickles made by Popsicle Brand too. So nice on a hot summer day!! Lots of good ideas here, enjoyed reading all of the…love ya!!

  18. LaTina @ July 8th, 2008

I love taco bell, I get the cinnamon twists… they have 170 calories (7 grams of fat, though) but satisfy my sweet and crunchy craving soooo much, and I’m stuffed…all that air in the
    twists must be…

That’s my big fast food splurge!!

  19. kamaperry @ July 8th, 2008

Love this! Hey I love going to Whole foods stores now, Like Sprouts, and Trader Joes. Have you tried the Ezekiel bread? And when you really want to feel decadent, try the Weight Watchers double fudge cake!
Restaurants like Denny’s and even IHop are offering healthy choices, too. And my fave is the Weight Watchers menu at Applebee’s! And of course you can’t forget Subway and I love the new “Fresco” menu at Taco bell! Hope that helps!

  20. poet @ July 8th, 2008

Oh! my gosh! Kama thank you! thank you! thank you! Hubby and I go out to eat a lot now we are here (not home) and all of those restaurants are here in our area. Luv ya! sista!

  21. NANA @ July 8th, 2008

The only thing I can add and I think someone already said it is the 100 calorie packs of chips. It gives me my chip fix and doesn’t let me eat a whole big bag.

  22. poet @ July 8th, 2008

Thank you everyone for your input. I am so excited to have all of this wonderful information to keep me on track. Luv ya! sistas! nightie! nite!
